Vintage chests of drawers in solid wood
The chest of drawers is the least spectacular and most used piece in a house. It is opened several times a day for years, which is exactly why the difference between a well-made one and a mediocre one shows up quickly. Here is what is worth checking before you start looking at photographs.
The right height depends on the room
There is no single correct height — there are three. In a bedroom, a chest at 80-90 cm puts the top at hand level, so you can actually use it as a daily surface. In a hallway, anything above 90 cm starts to block the corridor visually — aim for 75-85 cm and, more importantly, a depth under 40 cm, or you will brush against it every time you pass. In a living room, if the television sits on the chest, work backwards: the centre of the screen should land 100-110 cm off the floor, at the eye level of someone on the sofa, and the height of the chest follows from that.
A bombé chest needs to be seen
Bombé fronts — that outward curve across the drawers, inherited from the Louis XV style — do not read head-on. You see them at an angle, when light rakes across the curve and the piece gains volume. A bombé chest pushed into a tight corner loses exactly what you paid for: from the front it looks like any other. It needs a wall where it can be seen from a few steps away and, if possible, a side light source. A straight-fronted chest, on the other hand, takes corners and narrow spaces without losing anything.
A marble top is beautiful, and porous
Marble is not a waterproof stone. A glass of red wine left overnight, oil from a candle, or a slice of lemon can leave a permanent mark, because the acid eats the polish rather than merely staining the surface. The rule is simple: wipe immediately, use a pH-neutral cleaner, and never let vinegar, lemon juice or limescale remover touch the top. Once a year, an impregnating sealer for natural stone closes the pores and buys you peace of mind. One practical detail as well: a marble-topped chest can weigh 90-120 kg. It does not move on its own, and two people should not carry it up stairs without straps.
The drawers tell the truth about a chest
Photographs show the fronts; the quality is inside. Pull a drawer all the way out and look at the corners: a dovetail joint — those interlocking trapezoid pins — means solid wood cut by hand and a piece that will last decades more. Nails or staples mean something else. Then push the drawer back: if it glides on wooden runners and stops smoothly, it is sound. A sticking drawer is not a fault — wooden runners dry out and want wax or a paraffin candle rubbed along the rail, never oil, which collects dust and turns to glue. Check the drawer bottom too: on good pieces it is wood seated in a groove, not cardboard tacked in place.
Frequently asked questions
How tall should a bedroom chest of drawers be?
Between 80 and 90 cm. At that height the top sits at hand level and you can use it daily without stooping. For a hallway, come down to 75-85 cm with a depth under 40 cm.
How deep can a hallway chest be?
Ideally 30-38 cm. Beyond 40 cm you will brush against it every time you pass, however wide the hallway looks. Always keep 80-90 cm of clear passage.
How do you care for a marble top?
Wipe up any liquid immediately, use only a pH-neutral cleaner, and avoid vinegar, lemon and limescale removers entirely — acid dulls the polish permanently. Once a year, apply an impregnating sealer for natural stone.
Old drawers stick. Can that be fixed?
Yes, and easily. Wooden runners dry out over time: rub a paraffin candle or solid wax along the rail and the lower edge of the drawer. Do not use oil — it collects dust and turns to paste within months.
