A well-made bedroom holds fewer pieces than people expect. The bed takes half the room, and the remaining decisions come down to what fits around it without blocking the way and without turning the room into storage.

The space around the bed is not negotiable

Leave 60-70 cm clear on each side anyone gets into bed from — that is what you need to sit on the edge and put your shoes on. At the foot, 90 cm if that is the route to the door or the wardrobe. These numbers decide which bed fits, not the other way round: in a room three metres wide, a 180 cm bed leaves exactly 60 cm each side, which is the bare minimum. Measure the room before falling for a frame, especially with old pieces, which are often wider than they look in photographs.

The nightstand is chosen to suit the mattress, not the bed

The top of the nightstand should be level with the surface of the mattress, or at most 5 cm above it. Lower and you have to lean out of bed to reach a glass or a phone; much higher and it looks borrowed from another room. Since a mattress adds 20-30 cm above the frame, a vintage nightstand of 55-65 cm is usually right. In width, 40-50 cm is enough for a lamp, a book and a glass — more simply means more things accumulate there.

Light comes from three points, not from the ceiling

A ceiling light switched on in the evening is the least suitable light a bedroom can have: it shines straight into the eyes of anyone lying down. A bedroom works with a lamp on each side of the bed, at a height where the shade falls below eye level when you sit up, and a third diffuse source in the room. Warm 2700 K bulbs matter here more than anywhere else. And if a large mirror comes into the room, do not place it facing the bed: the unexpected reflection on waking bothers people more than anyone expects.
