Depth decides everything in a hallway
In a hallway the width of a piece matters less than its depth. A console or chest 25-38 cm deep goes unnoticed; one at 45 cm forces you to squeeze past it ten times a day. The practical rule is to keep 80-90 cm of clear passage — measure the width of the hallway before any other decision. In height, a console works at 75-90 cm: below 70 cm you stoop to use it, above 95 cm it takes on bar proportions and visually narrows the corridor.
The mirror has a correct distance and a correct width
Leave 15-25 cm between the console top and the mirror frame. Flush together they read as one stacked table; too far apart they look unrelated. In width, the mirror should cover 60-75% of the console: narrower and it is lost on the wall, wider and the piece beneath looks undersized. If the mirror has a carved or gilded frame, it is the lead element and the console stays quiet — not the other way round.
Most hallways have no window
Which is why the position of the mirror matters more here than in any other room. A mirror placed facing a light source — a wall light, the hallway chandelier, the open door of the next room — doubles the available light and makes the corridor look twice as wide. On the wrong wall it reflects a blank surface. Before you drive the nail, hold the mirror against each candidate wall and look at what it reflects: the difference is larger than it seems. And a coat stand, unlike a wall-mounted rail, can be moved until you find the spot that does not block the door.
