Light is the one thing in a house that changes the colour of everything else you bought. A well-chosen chandelier makes timber warm and marble alive; a badly chosen one makes the same materials read grey, whatever they cost.

Mounting height has exact numbers

Above a table, the lower edge of the fitting sits 75-90 cm from the top. Higher and the light scatters and the table loses its centre; lower and the people opposite can no longer see each other. In a room with nothing beneath it, leave at least 210 cm from the floor to the lower edge so nobody walks into it. With high ceilings the old rule still holds: add 2.5 cm of drop for every 30 cm of ceiling above 2.4 metres. For a stairwell, the reference point is not the floor but the step directly beneath the fitting.

What diameter the room asks for

The simplest and most frequently verified rule: add the length and width of the room in metres, and that sum in centimetres is the right diameter for the fitting. A room of 4×5 metres calls for a chandelier of around 90 cm. Above a table it is calculated differently: the fitting should be between half and two thirds of the width of the table — on a 90 cm table, a body of 45-60 cm. The most common mistake is a fitting too small for the room; it looks timid and leaves the corners dark, and correcting it means changing the fitting, not the bulb.

Crystal, bronze or porcelain

Crystal breaks light into points and wants clear bulbs rather than frosted ones, so there is something to refract; in a room with a low ceiling it can become tiring. Bronze and patinated brass absorb light and give a warm glow, right in a living room or study with a lot of timber. Porcelain and frosted glass diffuse gently and are the safest choice in a bedroom. On vintage pieces, always check the condition of the wiring: a beautiful fitting with old electrics is rewired cheaply by any electrician, but it has to be done before installation, not after.

The bulb matters as much as the fitting

Colour temperature changes the effect entirely. At 2700 K, warm light, timber recovers its red tones and brass gleams; at 4000 K the same materials turn flat and cold. For a house furnished in solid wood, 2700 K is not a preference but the correct choice. The second check: if the fitting has several arms, every bulb must match in temperature and shape — a single different bulb is visible from the doorway. And if you want a dimmer, make sure the bulbs support one; not all LEDs do.
