How to Clean a Crystal or Bronze Chandelier
An old chandelier usually combines two very different materials — crystal or faceted glass, and metal, bronze or brass — each with its own cleaning rules, plus the added complication of wiring mounted directly on the piece. Here's the correct order of work, so the sparkle comes back without any risk.
The first step, always: cut the power
Before anything else, switch off the dedicated breaker and, if you can, disconnect the chandelier from the socket. Damp crystal drops near a live electrical contact aren't just a shock risk — water can seep into the bulb socket and damage the wiring. Always work on a switched-off, fully cooled chandelier, never right after it's been lit.

Crystal: a gentle solution, no need to remove pieces unnecessarily
For light dust, a dry microfiber cloth run over each facet is enough. For older grime, a simple solution of distilled water with a little white vinegar (3-to-1 ratio), applied with a lightly dampened cloth and dried immediately with a clean one, restores the sparkle without residue. Don't remove the drops unless the grime is quite old — every removed piece must go back exactly where it was, and old fittings are often fragile.
Bronze and brass: the same rules as the rest of the furniture
The metal arms clean the same way as any bronze or brass fitting — a soft, lightly dampened cloth, wiped in the direction of the pattern, no abrasive products. The natural patina on the arms shouldn't be removed; it proves the piece's genuine age, just like the rest of vintage furniture's metal fittings.

What to avoid entirely
No all-purpose ammonia glass cleaners on patinated metal — they irreversibly discolor old bronze. No excess water, which can seep into bulb sockets or wiring hidden inside the chandelier's structure. No abrasive scourers on crystal — tiny scratches become visible exactly where light reflects the most.
How often a full cleaning is worth it
Once or twice a year, depending on how much dust the room collects, is enough for an ordinary chandelier. A quick wipe with a duster every few weeks, between the two full cleanings, keeps the sparkle up with no extra effort.
