Hallway Console: How to Choose the Right Size
The hallway is almost always the narrowest space in the house — and that's exactly where a wrongly sized console becomes a physical obstacle, not just an aesthetic one. The good news: a well-sized console turns a dull corridor into a welcoming transition space, without stealing from the walking width.
Depth: the rule that matters most
For a standard-width hallway (under 1.2 meters), a console 25-35 cm deep leaves enough room for a comfortable pass-through, even with the door open. Consoles deeper than 40 cm, however elegant, only make sense in wide hallways or secondary walkways, not on the main path to the door.

Length: proportional to the wall, not to ambition
A simple rule: the console shouldn't exceed two-thirds of the wall's length it sits against. A piece that's too long on a short wall looks disproportionate and leaves too little clearance at the ends for passing through, or for another small piece, like a coat rack.
Height: below mirror level, above the knee
The standard height, 75-85 cm, works well for most hallways — tall enough not to bump into while walking, low enough to leave room for a mirror or painting above. If the hallway also has a chair or vintage chest, keep the same height for a coherent visual set.

The legs matter as much as the top
Slim, curved legs — not bulky, straight ones — make a console look visually less bulky, even while occupying the same floor area. In a narrow hallway, this visual difference matters as much as the actual centimeters.
How we choose the right console at Martello, in Moldova and Romania
Every piece in the Martello catalogue is personally checked by us for stability and correct proportions. You can see and touch them at our showroom in Nimoreni, Ialoveni, fifteen minutes from Chișinău, or browse the vintage furniture section. A well-sized console makes a hallway feel more spacious, not more crowded.
