Coffee Table: What Height and Shape to Choose for Your Sofa
A well-chosen coffee table visually disappears into the living room's whole — a wrongly sized one stands out immediately, even if you can't quite explain why. The difference almost always comes down to three numbers: height, distance, and shape, measured against the sofa, not chosen in isolation.
Height: below seat level, never above
The basic rule: the table top should sit level with the sofa seat, or up to 5 cm lower — never higher. On a classic sofa, with the seat around 45-48 cm, that means a table around 40-45 cm — a bit lower than many modern models, designed for low, minimalist sofas. A table that's too tall, set next to a classic vintage sofa, looks disproportionate, however beautiful the piece itself is.

Distance: 40-45 cm, no more
Leave 40-45 cm between the sofa's edge and the table — enough room for legs, but close enough to comfortably reach a coffee cup without standing up. Under 30 cm feels cramped when moving; over 50 cm, the table looks detached from the seating area, as if it belongs to another room.
Shape: round, oval, or rectangular
In a small living room or one with frequent foot traffic, a round or oval table, just like choosing a mirror, removes corners you'd bump into and is easier to move around. A rectangular or elongated oval works better in front of a long, three- or four-seat sofa, where a round shape would look too small relative to the sofa's length.

Width, measured against the sofa, not the room
A lesser-known but equally important rule: the table should be roughly two-thirds the sofa's length. Beyond that proportion, it seems to dominate the seating area; under half, it looks like a stray piece, too small for its role. For a classic sofa paired with a marble-top table, this proportion matters doubly, since marble draws the eye and any imbalance is noticed instantly.
The rug, the equation's last piece
The table should sit entirely on the rug, not just one corner — otherwise the area looks visually unsteady. We wrote in more detail about how to choose the right rug for premium furniture, including how rug size relates to the rest of the living room's pieces.
