The Solid-Wood Bookcase: How to Build Your Corner of Books
A full bookcase says more about a person than any other piece in the house. It is not merely storage furniture — it is a portrait made of book spines. A solid-wood bookcase gives that portrait the frame it deserves: solid, warm, with the air of a house where people read. At Martello, bookcases in the classic style are the heart of every study we furnish in our minds for a client.
Why solid wood makes the difference
A bookcase holds real weight — tens of kilos of books on each shelf. Shelves of thin particleboard sag over time, forming that sad arc in the middle. Solid wood holds firm, year after year, without giving way. It also ages beautifully: it takes on patina, ties in with the rest of the furniture and becomes, in its turn, a piece with history — just like the volumes it houses.
Open or glazed shelves
Open shelves invite reading — you reach out and take the book. They are alive, but they ask for frequent dusting. Glazed shelves, as on Renaissance-style bookcases, protect valuable volumes from dust and light and add a ceremonial air. Many beautiful bookcases combine both: a vitrine below for precious pieces, open shelves above for everyday books.
How to arrange books with taste
An arranged bookcase is a pleasure; a chaotic one, a reproach. Combine books standing vertically with small horizontal stacks, which break the monotony and offer a stand for an object — a figurine, a box, a frame. Leave a few gaps so the shelves can breathe. Group by colour or by theme, as you like, but keep a rhythm. The rule is simple: do not fill every centimetre.
Where to place it
Its natural place is in the study, behind the chair or on the side wall, where it becomes the serious backdrop of work. But a beautiful bookcase is just as fitting in a living room, as an accent wall full of character. Place it against a solid wall and anchor it for safety, especially if it is tall.
Care
Dust the shelves and spines with a soft, dry cloth. Feed the wood with wax twice a year. Avoid direct sun on the shelf, which fades both the wood and the book spines. On adjustable shelves, check that the supports are firmly fixed under the weight.
